Two NBA teams in the minds of the media and NBA fans alike are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Both teams have been in trade rumors all season because both are in winning position now that the 2022 NBA season is over. Of course, they ended up on different ends of the spectrum, too.
Because of his fantastic players and the defensive prowess of his support team, the Boston Celtics had an amazing performance last year as they reached the NBA Finals. The team worked well together, and first-time head coach Im Odoka did a great job of persuading everyone to buy into their strategy. But as expected, the more experienced Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. However, the Celtics had a great season as no one expected that they would advance so far in the playoffs, especially after a poor start to the season.
Jaylen Brown got involved in Kevin Durant’s commercial discussions, but in the end, that failed. It’s no secret that Brown was alarmed by this rumor, and he clearly feels underappreciated as fans and the franchise itself tend to favor Jason Tatum. The duo of Tatum and Brown have worked well together, but the Celtics may want to make some major moves to change the roster. Target target: Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Meanwhile, the Lakers had a very different start and end to the 2022 season. For Lakers supporters around the world, the 2022 season was filled with frustration and inconsistency. The Los Angeles Lakers had one of the worst seasons in franchise history and were eliminated from a playoff game after failing to secure a place on the playing tour. Despite having LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as the three stars (more or less) in their prime, watch the post-season Lakers players from the comfort of their homes. They finished with a rotten 33-49 record, which is a terrible record.
It was even worse, given how much control LeBron James was. King averaged 30.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG and 6.2 APG while competing for the scoring title all year long. How could a LeBron James team be so terrified when the player was at his best? The team’s record was terrible, and no one expected such terrible play at the start of the year, especially not the 11th seed in the West. The franchise has tried to transfer Russell Westbrook, but it seems to be the norm next season as well.
The Lakers’ only realistic commercial option is Anthony Davis, the big man who led the Lakers to score in 2020 and helped lead the team to the NBA Championship. Davis was an inconsistent presence for the Lakers due to his injuries, and everyone seemed to be tired of it. The Lakers’ best bet for a roster change next season is to transfer Anthony Davis to the franchise’s biggest rival: the Boston Celtics.
A deal sending Anthony Davis to the Celtics for Jaylen Brown might be a hot trade that would do very well. Here is the trade package that can be improved for both sides:
Trade package: Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart for Anthony Davis, 2027 first round pick
Here’s why this trade package worked for both teams and how this deal will change the NBA landscape.
Boston adds volume and skill to paint to compliment Jason Tatum
The Boston Celtics’ defeat to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs was largely due to exceptional play on both ends of the ground by Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown, as well as superior defense by Marcus Smart and Al Horford. Undoubtedly, the core of the roster had a solid season as a unit, sending the Golden State Warriors into Game 6 before failing to force Game 7. There’s no doubt that losing the Celtics Finals was heartbreaking because they came out against Warriors lacking in maturity and preparation. . Golden State was shocked for the first time at the number of times the Celtics injured themselves during play due to their shockingly high turnover.
Thankfully, Boston has done a great job improving their guards by bringing in Malcolm Brogdon, but they must take a bigger step to get a quality big guy who needs a change of scenery. Jayson Tatum is unstoppable with his exceptional scoring skills and potential for a consistently one day MVP award. Most importantly, it should be noted that Anthony Davis, when at his best, is a player superior to Jaylen Brown and could team up with Jayson Tatum to form possibly the best offensive duo in the league. Aside from the two superstars, the Celtics can also hold on to other important players like Al Horford, Robert Williams and Malcolm Brogdon.
It should be noted that there are no guarantees that the Boston Celtics will reach the NBA Finals again. They had a magical walk last year, and everything worked out perfectly for them to get to where they went. Next year the Milwaukee Bucks will return healthy, and the Philadelphia 76ers have improved their roster as James Harden becomes more familiar with the system. Not to mention, the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks will always pose threats because of their all-star talent. Boston needs to take a big step to get past these perks, and Anthony Davis could be a game-changer.
LeBron James and Jaylene Brown are the best Western Conference duo
The Lakers have made no secret that they want to change the roster to complement all-star well-meaning LeBron James. The goal is to add players who are winning now, and the Celtics Pack gives them that. Brown is an All-Star with a chance to form a cute duo with King, and Marcus Smart is new to the season as he was named the league’s best defensive player. The Lakers’ starting line-up improves dramatically on both ends of the floor with the transfer of Davis to Brown and Smart, complete with James, Beverly and Thomas Bryant playing big roles. The Lakers’ problem was their lack of consistency and poor defensive efforts, things that this deal instantly resolved. Marcus Smart and Patrick Beverly are a back-court duo that no one wants to face because both players are upset and play hard and also defend the ball well. Intelligence alone has improved the Lakers’ defense, which is the weakest part of the team at the moment. More importantly, Brown is a very strong defender who has made huge strides in this aspect last year.
Anthony Davis is a dominant defender when he’s healthy, but seems very comfortable in Los Angeles, where he feels untouchable. He got his ring in 2020 by playing like a top 10 player in the game, but since then, he’s fallen off the radar. The Lakers can’t afford to risk keeping a satisfied big man with LeBron James approaching his forties in a few years. The Lakers must win now and make a massive roster change, and Anthony Davis is his best bet to do so because Marcus Smart and, in particular, Jalen Brown, are game-changing.
Without a doubt, Jaylen Brown immediately became the second best player in the Los Angeles Lakers as he averaged 23.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 3.5 APG last year with the Celtics while shooting 47.3% from the field, 35.8% from three and 75.8% from the free throw line. These are all-star stats and numbers that indicate that Brown was one of the most talented under-26 players in the NBA last year. Brown has at least 6 more years at the All-Star level if he continues to improve his game on both ends of the floor. It would be impossible to defend LeBron and Brown, and the rest of the roster is filled with players and two-way shooters, including Marcus Smart, Patrick Beverly, Lonnie Walker and Thomas Bryant.
The Lakers could be the favorite to get out of the Western Conference because the addition of a starting All-Star who is solid and generally available takes them over the top. Winning the NBA championship isn’t easy, and nothing is guaranteed, which means the pursuit of a top 20 player shouldn’t consider the Lakers, even if it means losing a once-in-a-generation talent to Anthony Davis.
Celtics start playing bigger, Lakers have a chance to win the West
Boston has size with Al Horford and Robert Williams, but the former is 36 and 37, while Williams appears to be an injury prone player because he’s a big guy who fights hard in the paint. Bringing in Anthony Davis could prolong Al Horford’s influence as a big man while giving Williams a break here and there. Of course, their internal defense improves drastically because Davis can block shots and defend the edge to the best of their ability. So for example, the Celtics have improved their attack and defense in paint.
After that, Jayson Tatum gets a free reign over the ocean. Tatum is an elite scorer, and Malcolm Brogdon could unlock his game better because of better playmaking. Brogdon and Tatum will be critical pieces of the attack and can lead the attack in every game. Having a big guy who can receive the ball and go to work also means that the Celtics will be more efficient in attack. The big guy will always shoot a higher percentage when compared to the surrounding player who relies on outside shots. Essentially, Boston is improving their efficiency by capturing high-quality shots, a factor that greatly damaged them in the finals last year. Of course, Tatum and Davis make up one of the best duo in the NBA with a long shot.
As for the Lakers, they are moving into their roster by bringing in Jaylen Brown, who can help LeBron James now and also help the Lakers in the future. Brown is only 25 years old, which means he has 7 years at the top level if he takes care of his body. He can lead the mission for Purple and Gold after the King retires and has the skills to be the cornerstone of the franchise. But most importantly, Brown complements James because he is immediately available and can take shots from outside and create his own attack. Of course, Brown would be hungry to prove himself that he’s a star player and wouldn’t feel as good in L.A. as Davis.
Next, Marcus Smart adds a distinct defensive style to a Lakers who have a defensive deficiency. Smart plays hard and has proven to be a winner, obviously a player LeBron James is fond of. Smart and Beverly will form a difficult backyard to score and Brown complete a dynamic duo with LeBron James. Losing Anthony Davis won’t be easy, but the Lakers need to make a change because James turns 38 next year and can’t afford to bring back a team that missed the playoffs completely. The Lakers rocked the roster, added a star, and formed the most talented duo of the Western Conference. Instead of reclaiming his core that missed the playoffs, the Lakers could make a move to completely change the way they play under head coach Darvin Hamm.
