According to the companies, the new VR headset aims to change what they see as restrictive policies that exist in the virtual reality market at the moment. As a result, the Somnium VR ONE headset will be built on an as open platform as possible, aiming to provide a groundbreaking immersive experience while working in both standalone and tethered modes without any restrictions.

“Every user deserves to fully own the hardware they purchase and be able to customize, fix and improve them at any time. We would like to provide an unrestricted software and hardware environment for all VR enthusiasts around the world. 3D models of the headset parts will be available so that any user with access will be able to Android source codes will be in the public GIT, and that’s freedom for metaverses, where we plan to spend more time in the future, explained Artur Sischoff, founder and CEO of Somnium Space.

Also commenting on the open source nature of the device, Prusa Research CEO Josef Prusa said: “We would like to see other products, such as virtual reality headsets, that take the same open-source community approach as our Prusa printers. Anyone will be able to download a 3D model. for the Somnium Space headset from Printables.com and print it at home on his printer.”

In order to be cost-effective, electronic lenses and special lenses will be mass-manufactured in partnership with Vrgineers and sold by Somnium Space online. This means that anyone with ambitions to build their own VR glasses will be able to purchase the required components and build the headset themselves. However, customers will still be able to purchase the fully assembled Somnium Space headset directly as well.
